What is eSigner for Documents?

eSigner for Documents is SSL.com’s cloud document signing service. Sign PDFs, contracts, and official documents from any internet-connected device using the eSigner Express web application, or automate high-volume document signing via the Cloud Signature Consortium (CSC) API with eSealing.

eSigner for Documents is two things in one:

1. eSigner Express: individual cloud signing
A web application that lets you sign PDFs and documents from any browser, on any device, using your SSL.com Document Signing Certificate stored in the eSigner cloud HSM. No hardware token needed.

2. eSealing: automated high-volume signing
An API-driven service using an OV Document Signing Certificate to automatically sign thousands of documents without human interaction. Integrated via the CSC standard API: suitable for automated invoice signing, compliance certificate generation, and enterprise document workflows.

Key benefits

No hardware token required

Document signing certificate private keys are stored in SSL.com’s FIPS 140-2 Level 3 cloud HSM: no YubiKey token, no smart card distribution, no physical hardware management.

Sign from any device

eSigner Express: browser-based signing from any internet-connected device. Sign PDFs, Office documents, and any CSC-supported format from laptop, tablet, or phone.

High-volume automation

eSealing via Cloud Signature Consortium (CSC) API supports signing thousands of documents automatically per day: the foundation for batch-signed invoices, contract generation, and regulatory filings.

Adobe AATL trusted

SSL.com is an Adobe Approved Trust List (AATL) member: signatures are automatically trusted in Adobe Acrobat and Reader worldwide without any recipient configuration.

Two signing modes

eSigner Express: Individual Cloud Signing

Web app: no software installation required. Sign PDFs and documents from any browser on any device. Provides certified signatures with higher document control than standard digital signatures.

eSealing: Automated High-Volume Signing

API-driven signing via the CSC standard API. Requires an OV Document Signing Certificate enrolled in eSigner. Signs documents automatically: no human intervention per document. Designed for enterprise workflows: invoicing, compliance certificates, onboarding documents.

Tamper-evident signatures

Every signed document carries a cryptographic signature that breaks on any modification after signing: tamper detection is automatic and visible to recipients in Adobe Acrobat and Office.

eIDAS and E-SIGN compliant

Legally binding digital signatures aligned with EU eIDAS regulation, US E-SIGN Act, UETA (49 states + DC), and 21 CFR Part 11 for FDA regulated industries.

CSC API integration

Standards-based Cloud Signature Consortium (CSC) API for developer and enterprise integration: interoperable with every major signing platform across Europe and North America.

FIPS 140-2 key protection

Private keys stored in SSL.com's FIPS 140-2 cloud HSM: keys never leave the hardware security module.

How it works

1: Purchase a Document Signing Certificate

Purchase an IV, OV, or IV+OV Document Signing Certificate from SSL.com: eSigner supports every document signing validation level for personal and organizational signing.

2: Enroll in eSigner

Enroll your certificate in the eSigner cloud signing service: the certificate and its private key move into SSL.com’s FIPS 140-2 Level 3 cloud HSM for signing-at-any-device.

3: Sign your documents

For individual signing: Log in to eSigner Express, upload your document, sign, and download.
For eSealing: Configure the CSC API to send documents for automated signing.

4: Recipients verify

Signed documents carry Adobe AATL-trusted signatures: verifiable in Acrobat, Reader, and Office.

Compliance and Standards

Adobe AATL

SSL.com is AATL member: document signatures trusted in Adobe Acrobat and Reader worldwide with no recipient trust configuration required.

eIDAS & E-SIGN compliant

Produces eIDAS Advanced Electronic Signatures and supports Qualified Electronic Signatures via CSC API: compliant with EU regulation and US E-SIGN Act for cross-jurisdiction document workflows.

FIPS 140-2 & CSC API

FIPS 140-2 Level 3 cloud HSM private key protection combined with Cloud Signature Consortium (CSC) standard API integration: secure key custody plus standards-based interoperability.
